opticians
Haven't been in years but need to get my eyes checked.

Which of you blind gits can suggest a venue.

Are boots opticians and spec savers that much different? Or is it pretty much the same everywhere?

Is there a stand out preference?

Mad Dog,

They are all pretty similar, each one coming out with a new gadget (Spec Savers digital thingy) to make you think Ooh Vision Express don't have that neither do Boots etc. I've been wearing glasses since the age of 3 (I'm now 40) so have done the rounds with most of the mainstream ones. I suggest you find the one with the fittest optometrist it will make the eye test more enjoyable.

There was a survey done a couple of years ago and Asda opticians came out cheapest and best.
Have used them and seem fine.

Mad Dog - I don't know how much you use a computer in your job, but if it's a lot your employer must pay for the sight test and pay for any glasses needed, specifically to use a computer.

I use a small, independent optician, rather than a chain. Been delighted with their work. I'm short sighted (contact lenses). Referred me to the eye clinic once, for a minor complaint, which was sorted with eye exercises would you believe.

Also advised me not to have laser eye surgery,

Re: opticians
Jim Peters was my optician while I lived in Chadwell Heath.

He had a blackboard in his surgery on which he used to write a statement indicating that I needed glasses, but always left the full stop off.

I never saw the point.

Re: opticians
My Brother is an optician at Specsavers and my Sister in Law at Boots - but they specialise in Contact Lenses only - I think that SS, VE & Boots use the new computerised machines to test your eyes and apparently the machines can also detect a lot of what an Ophthalmic Optician would look for - Glaucoma etc but you also get a normal check as well as the electronic one.

Then the dispensing of the glasses makes a difference i.e. measuring them properly if you need Varifocals as I wear

Re: opticians
Get your eyes tested at Vision Express.
Take the prescription to Specsavers and get their 2 pairs for 1 offer.

Re: opticians
I have my eye tests at my local opticians. I got my glasses from there too. I have no idea if they are more expensive that the larger, mainstream ones. You should support your local shops when you can.

Boots and Specsavers can fuck off.

Re: opticians
I finally had to admit needing glasses this year, once I could no longer hold a book far enough away to read it.

I could see everything else around me, no problem driving, etc.

I've had perfect vision all my life and this was a big admission for me.

Off I went to Specsavers and by the time they'd finished I'm surprised I didn't come out of there with a white stick and a Labrador.

£400 quid later I've got a pair of glasses for every conceivable distance and situation.

I can now see a lot of shit that I didn't know I couldn't, most of which I'd be quite happy not seeing.

Ask real life friends and neighbours who wear glasses for their recommendations. Seriously, I'm not being facetious.

Re: opticians
I have a friend who is an Optician, or Optometrist to be more accurately modern.

She is also an Indian and also a lesbian but can't tell her mum.

We dont often talk about her career given the alternative facets of her life.
